Diagnostic Evaluation

What is a Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy?

A vacuum-assisted biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain tissue samples from the breast when more detailed evaluation is needed.

It is particularly useful in specific situations, such as:
* Diffuse or subtle abnormalities seen on imaging, like clusters of microcalcifications or architectural distortion
* Cases where a previous core needle biopsy was non-diagnostic or inconclusive.

This technique allows for accurate sampling through a single small incision and may, in certain cases, provide a more representative sample of the area
under investigation.

What To Expect?

Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy

Step 1

You will be positioned comfortably. The area of concern is cleaned and numbed using local anaesthetic. You will remain awake, and general anaesthesia is not required.

Step 2

Guidance by ultrasound or mammography is used to precisely locate the area. A small probe is inserted through the skin into the targeted tissue.

Step 3

Using gentle vacuum suction, multiple tissue samples are collected. In some cases, the abnormality may be fully removed during the process.

Step 4

The procedure is completed in less than an hour. A dressing is applied over the site, and you will receive aftercare instructions. Most individuals can return
to light activities within 24 hours.
