Some exams may also require that you have U and E blood tests before the exam, the blood test results must be presented before the scan is done. Be sure to clarify preparations such as these with our staff in advance.
Cardiac CT scans will require a visit to the centre for us to obtain your family medical history and current readings of the BP and heart rate. This information is essential for booking purposes.

If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, please tell your doctor or technologist. Do not smoke, eat or drink 4 to 6 hours before the examination and inform the booking desk if you are diabetic. Take all regular medications with a little water, except Insulin or medication for Diabetes. If Diabetic, bring your medication and some food to eat after the examination. Please arrive at least 20 minutes before the scheduled exam time.
Intravenous Urogram (IVU)
Upon booking, U&E blood tests will be done to check your renal function before Iodine dye administration, unless these were done within 2 to 4 weeks prior to this examination. Inform the booking desk if you are diabetic and if you are allergic to Iodine. 2 days prior to the examination, eat a low residue diet. You cannot eat anything with high fibre and fat such fried foods, red meat eg beef, sadza, mahewu, vegetables like covo or spinach or cabbages or beans (unless trained to remove fibre). You may eat white rice, potatoes, eggs, chicken, liver, strained soups, and plain strained juices, white bread and plain desserts such as jelly or custard.
Take 2 tablespoons of Castor oil or Liquid paraffin after supper for those 2 days. This will allow your bowel to empty faster, and to prepare the bowel for the examination. On the day before the exam, do not eat any solid foods. You may have jelly, strained juices, and other liquids (no Milk). You may drink as much fluids ie water and clear fruit juices as you like, but not any carbonated(fizzy),guava juice or milk products. Follow the instructions on the Coloprep pack from the morning. This will empty your bowel so that the examination of your renal system is clear. Drink lots of water to replenish fluids.
Barium Enema
2 days prior to the examination, eat a low residue diet. Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
Please let us know if you have any allergies or adverse reactions to medications such as Iodine. Please leave your valuables at home or in your room in the hospital.
Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCUG)
If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, please tell your doctor or technologist. Please leave your valuables at home or in your room in the hospital.

Venous Port Insertion
Patient will need to have a Full Blood Count (FBC) Test and INR test done prior the procedure. If you are taking aspirin, warfarin, nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs your medication will be stopped and you may require hospital admission to receive alternative medication. The doctor will advise diabetic patients on the changes needed to their normal medication regime. If you have any allergies or have previously had a reaction to the dye (contrast agent) you must advise the radiology staff before the procedure. The results will be needed for the procedure and should therefore be ready at least a day before. Patient should refrain from eating 6 hours before the procedure although you may still drink clear fluids like water.

Ultrasound Scans
Abdomen Pelvis
No eating, no drinking, no smoking, no chewing gum 6 hours prior to your exam. 1 hour prior, empty your bladder then drink 1 litre of water. A full bladder is required to have this exam. Do not empty your bladder until your exam is completed.
Pelvis Female: Trans-Abdominal Ultrasound
1 hour prior your exam, empty your bladder then drink 1 litre of water. A full bladder is required to have this exam. Do not empty your bladder until your exam is completed.
Pelvis Female: Trans-Vaginal Ultrasound
Kindly bring along a companion for this examination to act as a chaperone during the scan.
Pelvis Male: Trans-Abdominal Ultrasound
1 hour prior your exam, empty your bladder then drink 1 litre of water. A full bladder is required to have this exam. Do not empty your bladder until your exam is completed.
Thyroid/ Neck Ultrasound
No preparation needed, however please refrain from smoking 1 hour prior to your exam.
Antenatal
1 hour prior your exam, empty your bladder then drink 1 litre of water. A full bladder is required to have this exam, Do not empty your bladder until your exam is completed. After 24 weeks of pregnancy no preparation is required.

Ultrasound Guided Biopsy
Patient will need to have a Full Blood Count (FBC) Test and INR test done prior the procedure to check that you do not have an increased risk of bleeding. The results will be needed for the procedure and should therefore be ready at least a day before.
On the day of the procedure, if patient is not hospitalized, they will need to be admitted . You will generally stay in bed for a few hours, until you have recovered and are ready to go home. Your assistant will advise you if there is need to fast before the procedure.

Percutaneous Nephrostomy
Patient will need to have a Full Blood Count (FBC) Test and INR test done prior the procedure. The results will be required by the radiologist at least a day before the procedure.
The patient will need to be admitted on the day of the procedure if they are not already in hospital and after the procedure the radiologist will decide if they can be discharged on the same day.
Patient should refrain from eating 6 hours before the procedure although you may still drink clear fluids like water and take some medication.

Digital X-Rays
There is no special preparation for X- Ray exams. This is a walk-in exam. There are no restrictions on your diet, so feel free to eat and drink within your normal diet. If possible, wear comfortable clothing, and remove all metal including jewellery. We also recommend leaving all valuables in a safe place. When needed, gowns are provided.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization
Patient will need to have a Full Blood Count (FBC)Test and INR test done prior the procedure. You will be an inpatient in the hospital before the procedure. You may be asked not to eat for six hours before the procedure and a urinary catheter may be placed into your bladder. Patient should refrain from eating 6 hours before the procedure.
You will generally stay in hospital overnight and may be discharged the next day. Once at home, you should refrain from strenuous exercise for about a week. One to two weeks off work is advised.

Microwave Tumour Ablation
Preparatory Measures
Patient will need to have a Full Blood Count (FBC) Test and INR test done prior the procedure to check that you do not have an increased risk of bleeding. The results will be needed for the procedure and should therefore be ready at least a day before. Your doctor may advise you to stop taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or blood thinners several days prior to your procedure. You may be instructed not to eat or drink anything for several hours before the procedure. Leave jewellery at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing. The patient will need to be admitted on the day of the procedure and will be required to spend the night in hospital after the procedure. No pain will be felt during the procedure but patient may experience soreness or pain on the site where the probe was inserted afterwards. This is generally easy to control and does not last more than a few days.
Risks
Microwave Tumour Ablation is generally a safe procedure although a few risks may arise as with any medical treatment. There is a slight chance of bleeding during or after the procedure. Some pain may be felt but this will not last more than a few days. Besides these risks, this is normally a very safe procedure.
