What Are Fibroids?

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths that form on the muscle tissue of the uterus. While most fibroids don’t require treatment, larger ones can significantly impact quality of life by causing heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and reproductive issues. At the MIC Radiology Group, we offer a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE), to effectively treat fibroids without the need for invasive surgery.

What To Expect?

Uterine Fibroid Embolisation

Step 1

Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) is a non-invasive treatment for fibroids that happens via a tiny incision in the wrist. A micro catheter is inserted and carefully navigated to the uterine arteries supplying blood to the fibroids.

Step 2

Also via the tiny micro catheter, embolic agents or tiny particles are introduced to obstruct blood flow to the fibroids.

Step 3

Deprived of blood supply, the targeted fibroids gradually shrink and disappear.

Step 4

We recommend an overnight stay for observation, and most patients can resume work the next day.

Can my gynae conduct the treatment?

This procedure can only be undertaken by an Interventional Radiologist who has undergone the appropriate specialist medical training, in a hospital with an angiographic theatre.

Am I awake during treatment?

Patients are sedated during the Uterine Fibroid Embolisation but do not require ventilation or a general anaesthetic.

Can I still have children one day?

Yes, many of our patients go on to have children. This uterus-sparing procedure selectively targets the fibroids, without affecting the uterine muscle and ovaries.
