Why choose a 3D Mammogram?

3D Mammograms, also known as Tomosynthesis, provide enhanced imaging of breast tissue, and can significantly improve the early detection of cancer — even before symptoms are present. Pioneers in this field, the MIC Radiology Group was proudly the first to install a 3D mammography machine in the country.

What to expect

Preparing for your exam

Wear a two piece

Try to wear a casual and comfy outfit like a loose skirt or pants, so that you’ll just need to remove your bra and top for the mammogram.

Plan to your cycle

To reduce your discomfort, schedule your mammogram one week after the start of your period.

No fasting required

You do not need to fast before your 3D mammogram screening.

Avoid DEODORANTS

Avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, creams or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts. Metallic particles in powders and deodorants can interfere with the imaging.

Will I be exposed to radiation?

A very small amount, yes. The radiation present during a 3D Mammogram is comparable to that of a standard 2D mammogram. The risk does not often outweigh the associated benefits of a 3D Mammogram.

What if abnormalities are detected?

If abnormalities are detected during a 3D mammogram, additional imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI may be recommended. In some cases, a biopsy may be needed to determine if the abnormalities are cancerous.

Are 3D Mammograms covered by Medical Aid?

In most cases, yes. 3D Mammograms are covered by most Medical Aids as a preventative measure in breast health, and can be repeated every two years.
